GOGOGU
This microlot comes from several producers located around the village (or kebele) of Gogogu, in the Guji appellation. These 400–500 producers grow coffee in their gardens or on small farms, often on plots of less than half a hectare (0.1–0.5 ha), with the majority not exceeding 2 hectares. In Ethiopia, such garden coffee represents a significant part of the national production. On these farms, coffee is grown in orchards (pruning is uncommon) alongside other local crops.
They cultivate endemic varieties, which they exchange with neighbouring farms or obtain from the drying station. These are mainly local landraces or varieties developed by the JARC (74110, 74112).
The producers deliver their cherries to the Uraga washing station, where the coffee is dried on the station’s 80 African raised beds. As Gogogu is a remote village, the cherries are often transported by pack animals (donkeys, mules) or motorcycles along difficult roads.
Once the coffee is ready, it is sent to Tracon’s dry mill, the exporter responsible for this lot, where it is sorted and hulled. Tracon’s dry mill is equipped with state-of-the-art sorting technologies to ensure high-quality preparation. The facility covers 27,000 m² and is fully dedicated to coffee processing and preparation.
PROCESS
The cherries are delivered by the producers to the Uraga station. For this lot, they receive a premium for the ripest cherries.
At the station, the cherries are manually sorted and then laid out on raised African beds for 15 to 21 days, sometimes longer depending on the air humidity.
Once drying is complete, the cherries are manually sorted again to remove any improperly dried ones and external defects.
